The Relationship Between Style and Font

Today I was working on a website design for a graphic designer. The design is fairly dark, brooding, and has the old-but-pretty feel, like an old photograph, or a “haunted” barn. The interesting thing was that all of the typography is done in a sans-serif font. I’ve always related sans-serif to very clean and simple designs, and never use sans in any kind of work that is “moody.” Is this a mistake on my part, or just a widely accepted rule that the designer broke on purpose?
