Hypocrite alert: Sony tells PSP devs to get creative

SCEE game director Tony Buckley says PSP developers need to get more creative, and “create something that attracts people to PSP” in an interview with CVG.
This tickles me. Sony’s history of arrogance and the general atmosphere of the PSP (a tiny, portable console) encouraged ports of console titles with minimal changes. When Sony themselves discouraged creativity with solid but unimaginative console-ish titles like Wipeout Pure and Daxter, hearing a Sony employee now practically begging developers to try new things with the handheld seems hypocritical at best.
Granted, Sony has backed unique/creative projects before (Shadow of the Colossus), and even some creative efforts on the PSP (Locoroco and Killzone: Liberation) but they don’t do it nearly enough, particularly enough to start clamoring for more creativity. This is the company that discouraged developers from creating 2D games for the Playstation. Then it turned out that some of the console’s biggest hits (Castlevania Symphony of the Night and Klonoa) were 2D, and they don’t seem to be as anal about it anymore, especially on PS2 which has some fantastic 2D titles. Considering all the creative efforts that pop up on the DS every other week, it’s not surprising that they’d change course and try to get developers to be more creative. But maybe they should set an example and show developers the kind of possibilities that exist when taking advantage of the PSP’s unique features, instead of the “do as I say, not as I do” approach.
The PSP is a great device, and I miss mine. However, it’s still too damn expensive. If Sony dropped the price, sales would skyrocket. It’s not like they have anything to lose anymore.

It would help if they didn’t keep fucking up shit as well, with the firmware updates, developers can’t keep up. Little mishaps happen.
