How to Change the PayPal Administrative Email Address
Quick back story: For the last two months, I have been trying to remove my email address from my mother’s PayPal account. At one point, I added it while I was setting up PayPal checkout on her website. The mistake I made was adding it as the “Administrative” email address. Basically, this is a special user that has complete control over the account, but is not the account holder’s email address. It’s meant for the “manager” of a business account, and it seemed like a good idea at the time.
The problem with the Administrative email is that once it’s added, there is no way to delete that email, or to change the Administrative email. I’ve literally spent hours searching both PayPal’s website, Google, and asking everyone I know that has a PayPal merchant account. Today, I finally gave into calling their support line.[1]
After a ten minute discussion with a sweet Middle Eastern woman who spoke only in whispers, I finally spoke to her manager, who, amazingly, spoke perfect English. It took her two minutes to figure out what I needed, and another minute to write me an email detailing what I need to do to change the Administrative user.
The solution was mind-boggling:
1. Log in to your account at https://www.paypal.com/.
2. Copy and paste https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_profile-logins-change-admin in to the address bar.
3. Select an existing email address from the drop down menu and click “Continue.”
Mind boggling. Why doesn’t PayPal have this information anywhere on their website?
Note [1]: I absolutely loath calling support lines of any kind, mainly because they are usually staffed by complete morons who can’t speak English. There’s nothing more frustrating than requiring support of some kind and constantly fighting a language barrier. The outsourcing of support lines is probably the single most idiotic thing that any company can do. By the way, Apple is the only large company I’ve called that doesn’t outsource their support lines. +1 Apple.
